Bariatric Surgery & Weight-Loss Program

A Comprehensive Program

Bariatric surgery is just one component of our comprehensive weight-loss program, which involves a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals.

The Saratoga Bariatric Surgery and Weight-Loss Program at Saratoga Hospital has received full accreditation as a comprehensive bariatric facility from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. This designation—the highest available from MBSAQIP—signifies that the program meets rigorous standards for bariatric care.

Dr. Dmitri Baranov, Medical Director, performs the gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, revisional bariatric surgeries and intragastric balloon procedures. The program also offers non-surgical options, including nutrition and exercise plans, as well as support groups.

Located in Saratoga Springs, NY, we serve patients from across the Greater Capital Region including Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Glens Falls and the North Country, as well as Western Massachusetts and Vermont.

During this procedure, a thin, deflated balloon is placed into the stomach and then filled with saline until it’s about the size of a grapefruit. The is an outpatient procedure. The balloon remains in the stomach for six months and enforces portion control. Once the balloon is removed, the patient continues to follow a six-month diet and exercise plan, developed by one of our nutritionists.

During the gastric bypass operation, the surgeon constructs a new, smaller stomach out of the top of the patient’s old stomach, which creates the early arrival of the fullness that comes with eating. The gastric bypass operation has been performed for more than 40 years for obesity, and it had been performed laparoscopically for the last 20 years.

The program offers exercise options through the Regional Therapy Center of Saratoga Hospital and with the Saratoga Regional YMCA.

With the sleeve procedure, most of the stomach is removed. The patient is left with a narrow tube or “sleeve” of stomach – just enough to connect the end of the esophagus to the starting point of the intestine. As with all restrictive surgeries, sleeve patients find they get full with much smaller quantities of food.

Blue Distinction Bariatric Surgery logo

Blue Distinction+ Specialty Care program of BlueShield of Northeastern New York.
Saratoga Hospital’s Bariatric Program is the only program in the Saratoga region to have earned this national distinction. The BDC+ distinction for Bariatric Surgery is awarded to facilities with national accreditation that show expertise in delivering improved patient safety, better health outcomes, cost-efficiency, and high bariatric-specific quality measures.*

*Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. A Local Blue Plan may require additional criteria for providers located in its own service area; for details, contact your Local Blue Plan. Blue Distinction Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that address consumers' need for affordable healthcare. Each provider's cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan. Providers in CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in two Local Blue Plans' areas, resulting in two evaluations for cost of care; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether one or both cost of care evaluation(s) must meet BDC+ national criteria. National criteria for BDC and BDC+ are displayed on www.bcbc.com. Individual outcomes may vary. For details on a providers's in-network status or your own policy's overage, contact your Local Blue Plan and ask your provider before making an appointment. Neither Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association nor any Blue Plans are responsible for non-covered charges or other losses or damages resulting from Blue Distinction or other provider finder information or care received from Blue Distinction or other providers.
