Saratoga Hospital’s Dr. Seth Capello Is First in Northeastern New York To Earn Center of Excellence Designation for Prostate Procedure

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y., August 10, 2020—Dr. Seth Capello of Saratoga Hospital Medical Group – Urology is the first and only physician in Northeastern New York to be designated a Center of Excellence for a minimally invasive treatment for an enlarged prostate.

More than 40% of men in their 50s and over 70% in their 60s have an enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition that can cause bothersome urinary symptoms and negatively impact quality of life.

The Center of Excellence designation indicates that Capello is skilled in treating this condition with the UroLift System. The minimally invasive procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, under a light anesthetic. Patients typically experience lasting relief from BPH Urolift capellosymptoms, often with fewer side effects than other BPH treatments.

“Although BPH is not dangerous, it can limit the ability to enjoy everyday life, and that can take an enormous toll,” Capello said. “The UroLift procedure can significantly improve urinary symptoms and allow many men to stop taking medications that have unpleasant side effects.”

The prostate gland is composed of two lobes that surround the urethra, the tube that carries urine outside the body. If the lobes are enlarged, they can squeeze the urethra and slow or block the flow of urine. During the UroLift procedure, small permanent implants are installed to lift the enlarged prostate tissue, hold it out of the way and increase the opening of the urethra.

“The Center of Excellence distinction offers an added level of assurance to patients who are considering the UroLift procedure—and that’s important,” said Dr. Richard Falivena, vice president and chief medical and physician integration officer at Saratoga Hospital. “The distinction also is a reminder that Saratoga Hospital physicians are committed to performing at the highest level as they make advanced treatments available to our community.”
