Marie Smallman, a Registered Respiratory Therapist for 29 years, works as a cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation specialist at one of our Regional Therapy Centers in Saratoga Springs. Her primary function is to monitor patients as they are recovering from a heart attack or cardiac intervention, and to monitor with oximetry if they are a patient with a chronic lung disease. Marie helps guide both groups in regaining their cardiopulmonary endurance and muscle strength.

Marie has been with Saratoga Hospital since August, 2013. “I chose to become a respiratory therapist when I visited a friend of mine in the hospital who had Cystic Fibrosis,” Marie says. “I saw the RT giving her chest physiotherapy, and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I’m extremely proud to say I work here, but I’ve also been a patient here. I did my physical therapy last year at the Regional Therapy Center in Malta. Though I was a fellow employee, it was very clear that everyone who walks through their doors are treated with the same level of respect and compassion. I really respect that.”

Marie’s favorite part about working at Saratoga Hospital is the feeling of community. She likes how people take care of each other here and finds the environment is one that promotes friendliness, helpfulness and caring about your neighbor.

When not at work, Marie spends time at home with her husband Eric and two dogs, Emmett and Lucy.  She enjoys doing anything outside, including downhill skiing, snowshoeing, running and kayaking. She especially loves mountain biking.  She has a passion for writing and has volunteered at Double H Ranch during their Camp Inspiration (which is a week specifically for kids on ventilators or who require non-invasive modes of ventilation.)

Marie Smallman is one of many compassionate, skilled professionals here at Saratoga Hospital.
