Blog: Celebrate Nurse’s Week May 6-12
male and female nurse at nursing stationEach May, the nation celebrates the nursing profession for the week ending May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. This year’s American Nurses Association theme is “Four Million Reasons to Celebrate,” reflecting the positive impact of America’s four million nurses.

Here at Saratoga Hospital, we are spending that week honoring this vital profession in several ways. We will be celebrating our certified nurses, providing an off-site professional development retreat, highlighting the successes of individual nurses and groups of nurses. All of our nurses will be presented a gift that displays their pride in being a Saratoga Hospital Nurse.

Saratoga Hospital is dedicated to our nurses’ future, and with our Nursing Scholarship and other tuition assistance. We are proud that 100 of our nurses are enrolled in academic programs and pursuing Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral degrees. There are 38 of our personal care assistants and technologists currently enrolled and pursuing careers in healthcare.

“We are committed to assisting our nurses in attaining their academic degrees,” says Mary Jo LaPosta, MS, PhD, RN, Senior Vice President of Patient Care and Organizational Excellence and Chief Nursing Officer. “One of the many ways we support our nurses is providing them with opportunities for professional development, and these bright, dedicated professionals, I am proud to say, take us up on it. It is a significant feat for a community hospital to be able to say that more than half of our eligible nurses are board certified in their specialty.”

Nursing is an active profession and, we recognize the need for nurses to care for their physical well-being. With that in mind, “Celebrate Care of Self” is this year’s theme for the professional development off-site retreat taking place during Nurse’s Week. James Kelley, MD, who leads our Sports Medicine practice in Malta, is discussing aspects of caring for the musculoskeletal system to maintain health, and Manager of our Clinical Dietary, Lisa Hodgson, RD, CDN, CDE, is presenting on eating well and staying healthy.

“As a Magnet hospital,” says Mary Jo LaPosta, “we value our nurses, involve them in decision-making, and invest in their ongoing education. We know that’s the best way to keep and attract nursing talent—and to ensure excellent patient care.”

An enjoyable way to support our Nursing Scholarship Program is through our Saratoga Hospital Golf Invitational. Learn more about our professional nursing staff at SaratogaHospital.org. And to all our nurses – thank you.
