    Blog: Cancer Prevention Tips

Did you know that up to 50% of cancer cases are preventable? Yet, a recent survey by the American Society of Clinical Oncology found that most people across the country are not actively including cancer prevention into their day. February is Cancer Prevention Month, and our skilled team of oncologists at Saratoga Hospital Medical Group – Oncology/Hematology would like to encourage you to be aware of actions you can take to protect yourself.

Cancer PreventionAccording to the American Institute for Cancer Research and the Prevent Cancer Foundation, the following steps may help reduce your risk for some cancers:

    • Maintain a healthy weight.
    • Be physically active.
    • Limit alcohol.
    • Don't smoke tobacco or marijuana, and don't vape.
    • Protect your skin from the sun.
    • Eat mostly whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes, such as beans and lentils.
    • Limit "fast foods" and other processed foods (such as boxed or ready-to-eat frozen meals).
    • Limit red meat and eliminate processed meats, such as sausages, as much as possible.
    • Avoid sodas and sweetened drinks. Limit juices.
    • Mothers: Choose breastfeeding when possible.
    • Practice safe sex and avoid risky behaviors.
    • Get immunized (HPV and hepatitis vaccines).
    • Avoid supplements for cancer prevention. Talk with your doctor.
    • Know your family medical history and get regular cancer screenings.

Your primary care provider can help you determine when and which cancer screenings you should take. Our highly recognized Imaging/Radiology department offers a broad range of services, including lung cancer screening, mammography, PET, CT scans and more.

While it is not possible to completely protect yourself against all cancers, your risk is greatly reduced by these simple, healthy lifestyle changes. These steps can also help reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and many chronic conditions. You’ll feel better, sleep better, and may even have a better quality of life as you age.
